Let’s keep books on our high streets! Now in its seventh year, Independent Booksellers Week (30th June to 7th July 2013) is designed to get all us readers supporting our local independent bookshops. Bookshops serve as important community hubs that we should never take for granted.
This is a national initiative but one with a real focus on ‘local’. Over 300 independent booksellers, plus a host of publishers (including yours truly and other members of the Independent Alliance) and authors are teaming up around the UK and Ireland, offering literary collectibles that you won’t find at the click of a mouse or anywhere else and putting on events on your doorstep. Look out for events happening in a bookshop near you.
Famous First Paragraphs: Exclusive Posters
Faber has teamed up with other members of the Independent Alliance to offer collectable posters from leading authors, that you’ll only find on sale in Independent Bookshops.
We asked five different Alliance authors to write out by hand the first paragraph or first few lines from one of their books, which have then been reproduced on beautiful cream A4 paper. Only 200 of each of the works have been printed and the authors have signed and numbered each one. The authors participating are:
- Simon Armitage – Man with a Golf Ball Heart from Selected Poems
- Robert Macfarlane – The Wild Places
- Yann Martel – Life of Pi
- Ruth Ozeki – A Tale for The Time Being
- Mark Forsyth – The Etymologicon
Each print costs £20 and as there are only 200 of each, so make sure to visit your local bookshop quickly to avoid missing out.
